Why do people give me dirty looks?

Whenever I say hi to my neighbors or store clerks when I check out, they never like saying hi to me. They either look down or squint and frown at me. Or they'll wait like a zillion seconds then put on a fake smile and say hi, but they'll never look at me. What's wrong with people nowadays?
