My cat is squinting her left eye...?!?

I'm really worried, this just started. Our cat started squinting her left eye and bathing it furiously with her paw. I hope she doesn't have a disease/tumor or anything, but I don't want to go to the vet and spend a fortune. WHAT DO I DO?!
